Biden’s transition team: neoliberalism incarnate

On September 5th, Joe Biden added four new members to his transition team, which was not really a team. It consisted only of Ted Kaufman, the 81-year old Democratic senator from Delaware. Considering Kaufman’s reputation as a deficit hawk and his advanced age, Biden had to cover his left flank and give the appearance of diversity.

Nobody would see his choices as going overboard. There’s only one new member who has the appearance of being progressive enough to get Bernie Sanders salivating: New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. She’s a Mexican-American that Daily Kos described as “the TYPE of VP candidate that could rally all of us together — progressives, mainstream Dems, working class, suburbanites, people of color, etc. — to take back our country.”

Joe Monahan, who blogs about New Mexico politics, was less impressed. In an article that had her hanging on her own petard, we learned of her disgust with Green New Deal type activists in the Democratic Party. “They’ve lost their minds. We’re the third-largest oil producer in the country. I’m going to get a benefit from that.” With fracking polluting the state’s water, a dubious benefit, Lujan blithely gave the green light to the oil and gas industry. The Santa Fe-New Mexican reported, “Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham told an energy conference Tuesday that her administration aims to work with oil and gas on key issues, a message that appeared to delight industry representatives.”  This must have recommended her to Biden, who said the following in a Pittsburgh speech, “I am not banning fracking. Let me say that again: I am not banning fracking. No matter how many times Donald Trump lies about me.”

  1. That’s right, “Lunchbucket Joe” and “Lock ’em Up Kamala” are a phony “opposition.” More good reasons to vote for Howie Hawkins ang Angela Walker of the ecosocialist Green Party US.

  2. If the unions, such as they are, cannot do anything, and I mean anything, to combat the horrible future facing us, visible every day now, then what hope is there? Farhad Manjoo argued in the NYT that general strikes are badly needed now. This is true. Death stalks so many workplaces now, even college campuses and college towns. All that capital wants is evermore money, period. The Democratic Party is a party of capital, period. Our time is rapidly running out. Isn’t it really now or never. Pandemic, catastrophic climate change, economic collapse, police and vigilante violence, rampant irrationality and insanity now mainstream, fires and winds and floods everywhere, species disappearing. What more will it take?

  3. A good piece, but it could use some editing (e.g. James Clyburn, not Clymer).

  4. CounterPunch does not do editing. I’m hesitant to bother Jeffrey St. Clair with changing this now since he just had to evacuate from his house in Oregon City that is surrounded by fire.

  5. Biden put up an ad recently promising not to raise taxes on incomes under 400,000 dollars or cut medicare or Social Security. The reality is that he will soon be persuaded that he has no choice unless he cuts funding for “lawn forcement” and God’s Armed Forces by a whacking amount. This he will never do–the Reaganite Force of Murrica being The World’s Only Superpower and the need for Lawn Order will remain strong with him. So he’s begun lying outright about his intentions.

Holy Governor Cuomo has already decreed ex cathedra that we may not raise taxes on the rich and LunchBucket has declared that we must always have the world’s greatest military. Those declarations you can take as gospel. The only cuts to the Lawn Forcement budget will be to the federal SWAT support that will be cut because the new administration will find a way continue Trump’s abortive national riot policing initiative under the rubric of Police Reform–under a new department with a different uniform and some touchy-feely bullshit. The cuts will be illusory–in fact funding will be doubled.

So we will discover to our astonishment that gosh we have a Great Big Deficit and Who Knew Trump Would Leave Such a Mess, and Sorry Seniors debt-enslaved students, and the growing armies of the unemployed–kiss your asses goodbye. Cyanide pills anyone?
