Chemical Attacks, False Flags and the Fate of Syria

COUNTERPUNCH, April 13, 2018

Once again Eastern Ghouta is the epicenter of a confrontation between the White House and Bashar al-Assad. On April 7th, medics in Douma, the largest city in the agricultural belt surrounding Damascus, blamed him for authorizing the aerial bombardment of chlorine gas that cost the lives of at least 40 people and injuries to hundreds of others. While chlorine gas has been used in the past by Assad’s air force, it has not had the devastating impact it had this time.

Syria, Russia and Iran dismissed such reports as a “false flag” in which jihadists used fraudulent photos and videos to pressure American imperialism into taking their side in an all-out attack such as the one that took place against Iraq in 2003. For those of a conspiracist bent, this was a con job just like the Apollo Moon landing hoax when film simulations supposedly substituted for the real thing.

  1. I am not convinced that the video purportedly memorializing the murder of Bin Laden – watched by Obama, Clinton, and the US national security team (note the globally broadcast still from the event) – wasn’t actually an early rough cut from “Zero Dark Thirty”. I’m no expert, but even I could produce a convincing image of Bibi corn-holing Obama with the rude tools at my command. The only reports available from Ghouta originate with the US backed rebel forces. It is fatuous in the extreme to lend them credibility. It is criminal to kill in response. Be all the Zionist zealot you will. I don’t give a damn. But do not incite genocide. The Third Reich came to the realization that the Jews, unwilling to assimilate, were exerting undo and dangerous hegemony over the economic and cultural affairs of the German Republic. I’m beginning to see their point. It’s not enough to call someone an “anti-semite” (witless locution). You have to prove them wrong.

    Plus, they killed Jesus.

  3. ‘no expert’ Bill, you have to be the evilest lowbrow imaginable, so I have a bit of high brow thoughtfulness for you to consider.

‘when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you.’

  4. Louis posting grotesque pictures of dead babies reminds me of those people standing on the side of highways outside of Planned Parenthood. Maybe Nat Hentoff used to do that, I don’t know.

The most guileless get caught up in the talk of yellowcake (last Gulf war), Saddam’s soldiers going into a nursery and ripping babies out of incubators to the horror of a “nurse”: (first Gulf War – the “nurse” was actually the Kuwaiti ambassadors daughter, whose fiction was the product of PR firm Hill & Knowlton). Goes back to the Gulf of Tonkin, or going back to the Bryce Committee over a century ago, talking about bayoneted children to try to draw the US into World War I.

Congratulations though, President GrabThemByThePussy is dropping freedom bombs on the Syrians. You’ve done a good job for paving the way for this among whatever remnants of the Trotskyite cults that are out there and still functioning. Of course, Stalin said Trotskyites existed to support western imperialism, and you are a shining example of that.

Trump is bombing brown Arabs! Congrats!

    Comment by Adelson — April 14, 2018 @ 3:29 am

  5. Adelson,

Have you been as outraged all along as Russia and Assad and Iranian forces have been bombing, mass-murdering and torturing their way through to displacing half the Syrian population, incinerating half of a million lives, torturing people on an industrial scale with the help of the Russian Air Force and mercenaries and Iranian theocratic forces who already enforce, and wish to expand, their version of a Shiite-Islamic cleansing of the Syrian population?

Save your hypocritical sanctimonious sermonizing. Assad, Russia and Iran have been bombing brown Arabs for seven years. Only now you jump into hypocritical outrage in defense of brown Arabs? You f**King kidding me?

  6. ‘More than 3 sites struck says Syrian Observatory of Human Rights: “a total of three scientific research centres had been hit in the attacks – 2 in Damascus,1 in the Homs area – in addition to military bases in Damascus.”

News like that brings Adelson whilst the aerial bombardment of Syrian civilians over years is connived with and applauded by his ilk. ‘Hypocritical sanctimonious sermonising’ is right. The garbage written by Adelson suggests he goes with the Russian regime line that the chemical attacks have all been staged for propaganda purposes. What a garbage mind. Whatever Stalin said was equally grotesque. It is not clear why Stalinists exist at all except to ‘dismay, distort, distract, destroy’. Useless lousy hypocrites.

  7. ‘After the message that the use of everything except for CW is fine, back to work for #Assad. Still so much killing to do, even though #Assad cheered before already that #Syria’s society had become so much more “homogeneous” and “healthier” by the war.’ (Bente Scheller)

Your outrage Adelson can then go back to its hole, that abyss where you think your profoundest thoughts.

  8. Of course, Stalin said Trotskyites existed to support western imperialism, and you are a shining example of that.

You mean the same Stalin that voted to created the state of Israel? And that abandoned the Greek Communists to satisfy his WWII allies? And who signed a treaty that allowed France to retain Indochina?

So bizarre that anybody cites Stalin as a revolutionary in 2018. But then again, that is a sure sign of class collaborationism–just what you’d expect from one of Assad’s butt boys.

  9. From Leila Al Shami:

“[“Anti-imperialist” idiots] repeat the mantra ‘Assad is the legitimate ruler of a sovereign country’. Assad – who inherited a dictatorship from his father and has never held, let alone won, a free and fair election. Assad – whose ‘Syrian Arab Army’ can only regain the territory it lost with the backing of a hotchpotch of foreign mercenaries and supported by foreign bombs, and who are fighting, by and large, Syrian-born rebels and civilians.”

“This ‘anti-imperialism’ of idiots is one which equates imperialism with the actions of the US alone. They seem unaware that the US has been bombing Syria since 2014. In its campaign to liberate Raqqa from Daesh all international norms of war and considerations of proportionality were abandoned. Over 1,000 civilians were killed and the UN estimates that 80 per cent of the city is now uninhabitable. There were no protests organized by leading ‘anti-war’ organizations against this intervention, no calls to ensure that civilians and civilian infrastructure were protected. Instead they adopted the ‘War on Terror’ discourse, once the preserve of neo-cons.”
