Johnstone: Cannot “reduce” Marine Le Pen’s anti-Immigrant stand to “racism”.

Diana Johnstone is a columnist for the American left site, Counterpunch.

She has, to put it mildly, ‘form’ on French Politics saying that the Front National is “basically on the left”. And indeed on British Politics, where she warmed to UKIP’s views on European immigration (Diana Johnstone’s poisonous nativism) (1)

In her most recent contribution (21st of April)  to the favourite journal of ‘wise-guys’ who want the ‘low down’ on politics, this is her view on tomorrow’s French Presidential election.

The Main Issue in the French Presidential Election: National Sovereignty

  1. Johnstone has been a propagandist for Russian govt interests at least since the Balkan wars in the 90s. She denied proven massacred by Milosevic forces and has done similar for Assad.

  2. As you know, Johnstone has been appallingly consistent about this: http://www.counterpunch.org/2012/04/24/disillusion-with-the-euro-and-europe/

As you have been in your criticism of it: https://louisproyect.org/2016/06/29/diana-johnstones-poisonous-nativism/

  3. Errr … Not to change the topic, but to change the focus … just for a bit of silly levity …

Is Diana Johnstone the twin sister of Joyce Brabner, separated at birth?

  4. Sorry Louis, I just realized that Brabner might sue you for my posting her image in the comment section of your blog. So, if you find it inappropriate, please do remove my silly comment, along with this one. Cheers.

  5. So who will employ the charge of racism more in this campaign–the neoliberal Macron or Melenchon? Anyway, the priority is for a run-off between Melenchon and Le Pen, in my opinion. So what if Macron isn’t a racist. He’s worse. But hey, if you’ve got one drum, you gotta bang it. Love the Marxist IP.

  6. @ Richard; it would be nice if you would quote from your link to Johnstone, analyze her article. What in it do you not agree with? Excerpt and analysis please. I find both the current and past article quite fair and astute. She understands that “left” and “right” don’t mean much in the context of opposition to neoliberalism and the EU. This should not be hard stuff for a genuine leftist to understand.

  7. OK, I hadn’t clicked on the link to the rest of the article, which I thought was Louis’s. I read the rest of the words, most of which are simply excerpts from Johnstone’s serious article. He or she quotes and excerpt, and then basically sticks his or her tongue out. This apparently passes for a critique. And perhaps Louis will promote the proposed boycott of Counterpunch, and stop publishing there. This is all just “anti-anti-imperialist” cliquishness. Talk about the amen corner. Not a substantive view to be found. Marxist neoliberals onward!

  8. @Reza; it’s probably fitting that you have a bizarre and inappropriate sense of humor, if that’s what you call it.

  9. @ Les; gosh, I guess I had the funny idea that it was the west that eviscerated Yugoslavia, piece by piece. But at least it wasn’t Assad.

    Comment by David Green — April 22, 2017 @ 7:04 pm

  10. David, Are you deliberately trying to look like an asshole? Is that your sense of self-amusement? It is very fitting! Keep talking to yourself.

  11. Thanks for hipping me to these informative articles by Ms Johnstone! I guess it wouldn’t make for good clicking to acknowledge her praise for Melechon, or her specificity about Le Pen’s form of nativism compared to Netherlands or the Tea Party US. It’s pretty common analysis to note that far-right populists are capable of articulating positions (pacifism, a Palestinian state, a rejection of NATO belligerence) that should find favor with true leftists.

  12. Actually, it is Mélenchon. Of course, she would praise Mélenchon: “French flags and la Marseillaise have replaced the Internationale at Mélenchon rallies.” (https://www.counterpunch.org/2017/04/21/the-main-issue-in-the-french-presidential-election-national-sovereignty/)
