An unprecedented ferment is developing around the country. That’s what we’ve been hearing from people we’ve talked with around the country. New Orleans The mood there is symbolized by the 7-10,000 …

  1. Something’s definitely happening here!

Our mostly quiet and ‘not-much-happening’ southern California town of little repute and no significance greeted Trump’s inauguration with the same sense of outrage as did the nearly half a million women who marched on Washington, DC. Nearly 10,000 women along with their kids (especially daughters) and men came out for that January 21st march and rally. Nothing like this had ever happened here in all my years of living here.

Also … Work place grumblings about ‘him’ is common place and most water cooler (or copy machine) conversations end up with, “Can you believe he’s ______?” (fill in the blank with the latest policy proposal or revelations); our heads shaking as we walk off to get back to work. Previously, we almost never talked politics with coworkers we were unfamiliar with. Now, it’s very common.

  2. I hope you’re right, Reza and Louis–these are heartening signs. I’m not holding my breath here in DC all the same. We have a month of “unprecedented ferment.” The nature and extent of the ferment is still to be seen, as is the nature and extent of the countervailing repression.

Ferment is good, but what we need to see is a) whether the clowns now in charge have or can muster the organization to enforce the fascist-like things many of them are saying, and b) whether the ferment will continue in some politically productive way, especially given the rigidity of the U.S. constitutional system and the Republican and Democratic antiparties that exist to stifle real opposition.

Too many people are hoping for Trump’s personal downfall and ignoring the fact that he himself is in many ways the least of our problems.

    But yes, always, to hope.
