Bob Buzzanco on the Trump victory

Filed under: parliamentary cretinism — louisproyect @ 1:01 am

Bob Buzzanco is a leftist professor at the U. of Houston

Donald Trump was opposed, vigorously, by Wall Street, by the media, by the ruling class, by other mega-billionaires like Cuban, Buffett, Gates. And he won. In a very fucked-up and dysfunctional way, it means democracy won out. The people beat the oligarchy.

If only the left would have learned that years ago, that you had to confront the oligarchs, instead of lesser-of-evilism and “this is the most important election of our lives.” Fuck every Democrat who blamed Ralph Nader for the 2000 defeat. Fuck everyone who made Kerry and Clinton the nominees, in a system that was NEVER RIGGED but established that way. Fuck the self-described Socialists who masturbated about Bernie Sanders while working class people were putting their bodies on the line to stop KXL and fracking. Fuck all the NY intellectuals and Jacobinite boutique radicals whose political involvement consisted of snarky anti-Clinton tweets (that’s a challenge to come up with), rock-star blogs, and inside frat clique politics.

Looks like I might be able to buy a happy meal with my pension now. Fuck the Clintons, their foundation, their Goldman Sachs incestuous relationship, all that. And I weep for my peeps in Youngstown, Warren, and Niles who bought Trump’s line. They’ve been reamed up the ass by the Dems for so long that they voted for the devil they didn’t know. I personally know people who voted for Trump and if someone called them “deplorable” in front of me, they’d have to deal with some Sicilian “debate.”

She lost to Donald Trump. Think about that. She lost to essentially a game show host. I’d rather have Bob Fucking Barker as president.

(Edit: Scott Parkin has informed me that Bob Barker has good politics so I’m sorry to insult him. Drew Carey? Alex Trebek? The late Gene Rayburn?)

  1. Rarified university bs. Hillary lost to tag team of Trump, Putin, Wikileaks, and FBI.

  2. Wouldn’t Sanders have been better than Trump? Or mindless ranting?

    Comment by Doug — November 10, 2016 @ 10:12 am

  3. “university bs”? What is that supposed to mean–any use of compound-complex syntax or quotation marks to show the use of words as words? I mean, the guy said “fuck” fa chrissake. What do you want?

There are a lot of Forrest Gumps on the American left, which hews to the cult of the virtuous imbecile (and the devastating Tweet) just as much as the right. This of course gives the many bad actors in the university carte blanche to do as they please in the name of literacy.

Shoulda woulda coulda in any case. The question now is what next–how to organize and to what purposes. Protest alone will not suffice.

  4. If the resistance does not include an actual occupation of Washington, D.C., that shuts the fucking city down, it will fail. Mere marches and rallies in cities other than DC will not save billions of people from death via the climate crisis.

  5. Doesn’t Trump’s election put people like Mike Whitney, Pepe Escobar and their ilk in a bind?

These people have been drooling over what a great statesman and super-leader Putin is, how Putin outsmarted the imperialist west, and so on and so forth. So, now that Putin’s favorite American political figure has been elected president, will the Putin-lovers in the American left support Trump? If they were to remain consistent, they should. Congratulations to Mike Whitney, Pepe Escobar and all those phony leftists: Finally, they have a politician in the white house who is admired by Putin-the-Great!

  6. Typical homophobic comments by bigot included:: “reamed up the ass”. These hetero males who fear their asses being sexual and untouched, have to put down Gay male sex in such expressions – and this is still “acceptable” to relist here?

  7. “In a very fucked-up and dysfunctional way, it means democracy won out.”

Not to get nit-picky here, but …

Actually Clinton won the popular vote count, yet lost the elections. So, the System installed by the ‘forefathers’ won; not democracy.

    Comment by Reza — November 10, 2016 @ 6:35 pm

  8. “homophobic comments” re anal intercourse–Equal rights for all sex acts is roughly on a par with fair play for Pluto by comparison with the shitstorm of depression and suffering that is about to be unleashed.

Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, unemployment insurance, the EPA–they’re all goners in the first 100 days. This is what the right has been dreaming of ever since Roosevelt, and Trump’s asinine campaign promises won’t mean a thing, even if he remembers them.

Do you have any idea how much suffering this is going to cause? Nothing like it has been seen in the lifetime of anybody now living. A sense of proportion is needed.

  9. “Rarified university bs. Hillary lost to tag team of Trump, Putin, Wikileaks, and FBI.”

Didn’t expect Hillary’s tin foil hat brigade to show up here.

  10. I had expected a better analysis than this on this blog. Hope one will still come. Cheers

  12. Can someone please explain to me how a multi billionaire , who was once besties with the Clintons, can be considered “anti-esthablishment”??

    Comment by Walter — November 11, 2016 @ 5:45 am

  13. The people beat the oligarchy.

Trump is not an oligarch. I see.

Clinton won the popular vote and yet lost in the Electoral College. This is a popular victory?

The FBI intervened in the election in a fashion that has been denounced as clearly improper even by dyed-in-the-wool Hillary hater (and Putin bootlicker) MIke Whitney. This is a popular victory?

But hey–you said fuck. Must be a regular Joe, right?

da fuckin people fuckin SPEAK! Workers talk like this!

    Comment by Jean Martin — November 11, 2016 @ 5:56 am

  14. Sure hope so, and hope that was a “Socratic” provocation. Last thing we need is a macho anti-intellectual rant bashing Sanders supporters, who after all were proven correct on Clinton. We need to be talking to those people.

American culture is anti-intellectual and anti-theoretical enough as it is. It permeates the left as well. Stop it.

Basically, the people who voted for Obama didn’t want more Clintonism, period. Yet Trump won by a mere 300K electoral college-factored votes. A ~0.3% margin of the popular vote. As in less than 1%.

Call me complacent, but I doubt the republicans will get enough traction to run over Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, unemployment insurance (run by the states in any case) in 100 days. They’ll have their hands full repealing Obamacare. They have to run this stuff through the Senate.

Yes people will suffer, but I am optimistic about the future. That’s a multi-racial and feminine working class future. Not Trump’s White Man’s Worker’s Party, and a million Trump’s aren’t going to change that. I don’t blame them for voting for good old race and gender privilege after Obama let them down. But that doesn’t mean we downplay this social factor in debates within the left. Tamping down talk of racism, White supremacy and misogyny is what the Putin Brigade is pushing.

Trump is but their last stand, their Alamo.

  15. Brad. Hope you are right.

I do think the mass demos now in progress will have no effect unless they lead to a new form of organization that includes a full-scale political and labor agenda and embraces mutual aid. The new organizational elements must be committed among other things to offering a helpful presence in people’s everyday lives, however limited at times the scope of what they can accomplish. No political formation now on the scene offers this as far as I know.

I suspect that churches and megachurches offer the illusion of this, which is a political advantage for the Right, seemingly overlooked by all analysts of the current disaster.

  17. “Fuck the Clintons, their foundation”

“Health is a big focus. In more than 70 countries, according to the foundation, it helps 11.5 million people, including 800,000 children, with HIV/AIDS get their medication at 90% lower cost — more than half the adults and three-quarters of the children getting treatment in the world today.
But it does all kinds of other work as well. For instance, it helps East African farmers get better seeds and fertilizers. It supported Nepal’s reconstruction after the 2015 earthquakes. And it has connected more than 500,000 Latin Americans to job training and entrepreneurship opportunities.”

    Yeah, fuck those guys.

  18. This is left wing White Supremacy. The Far Right managed to swing the election for a racist, misogynist, demented, narcissist grifter. Since the KKK-endorsed candidate’s victory, bigots have committed a rash of hate crimes. There is no word about this only that Buzanco “weeps” for his WHITE “peeps” in Warren, Youngstown etc. and makes a veiled threat against anyone who would dare to call those who support a White Nationalist deplorable. Buzanco claims this is a “people’s victory” in a fucked up way, of course. (It would be only a WHITE people’s victory, in a fucked up way) He does so by skipping over the popular vote, voter repression, blatantly partisan FBI intervention, illegal hacking and Wikileaks manipulation. The media gave Trump billions of dollars worth of free coverage , focused excessively on Clinton’s e-mails and continually tried to normalize Trump but things are different in Buzanco’s world.Totally deplorable.
