  1. Louis, you and here-comes-the-tumbleweed inspired me to comment, which I did on my own blog under my article “Explaining ISIS Terrorism to an American Teenager,” and also at here-comes-the-tumbleweed’s blog, under his “Belated Response to GG.”

  2. I am in fundamental agreement with tumbleweeds general approach. It at least attempts to encompass all the contradictions of this deeply contradictory situation, for which the usual pat postures simply won’t do.

    Here’s one of those contradictions:

“Al-Nusra is regarded as a partner by many factions in the opposition because it has focused on fighting Syrian troops rather than seeking to set up a “caliphate” like the one established by its rival IS.

“Saudi Arabia is to host a meeting next month of Syrian armed and political opposition members to build a common platform for peace talks.”

Saudi Arabia is a key US regional ally, along with Turkey and Israel. Saudi Arabia and the GCC states are among the most reactionary regimes on Earth. Saudi Arabia had been recently described on the OpEd pages of the NYT as “The ISIS that made it”. A description that appears to fit, as the regime recently condemned a Palestinian to death for…apostasy. Indeed the worship of other gods is banned in the Medieval Kingdom.

Support from this quarter for Syrian revolutionaries MUST come with no strings attached. Somehow that is to be doubted here. We should all be watching for this meeting next month very closely.
