The End of Academic Freedom in America: the Case of Steven Salaita

As such my attention has been riveted on the trials and tribulations of Steven Salaita who was unfortunate enough to be the victim of a combined assault by the Israel lobby and a university officialdom that was determined to make him pay for telling the truth, no matter how bitter that truth. Since I am very close to some tenure-track professors, I have a better handle than most on what it means to be robbed of a tenured position. Getting tenure nowadays is almost like winning the American Idol contest, so the very idea of being denied a position and thrown to the wolves (no offense meant to a member of the animal kingdom far more noble than the University of Illinois mucketymucks) struck me as a wantonly destructive act—all the more so since it was defended in Pecksniffian terms by the likes of Cary Nelson.

  1. Salaita was asked to clarify his remarks…….this could come straight out of Milan Kunderas Unbearable Lightness of Being. There, the surgeon, Thomas, is warned that someone might misunderstand his remarks, and urged by a well-meaning head surgeon to sign a retraction…….It might be a good time for people unaware of this book –and others by K.–to consider that Communism´–as it is conventionally known–has many nasty features in common with contemporary capitalism. I say that because I gather from a recent review that K. is not so well known as he once was….. And I apologize for my stubborn keyboard…

  3. I forgot to say that Thomas lost his job, and ended up, after being harassed, living in a village and driving a truck…….

  5. Salaita hated school, hates the corporate p.r. toadies who spoon feed the diploma mill workers their salary in exchange for p.c baby talk, and brilliantly satirizes the subversion of academic means by organizational ends.

But he can’t cut the cord. He still wants his piece of the pie just like the rest of us.
