Dear Governor Cuomo,

I understand that you intend to visit Israel this week to ‘express solidarity with Israel’ and its people. On behalf of the people of the State of Palestine, I extend an invitation to you and your delegation to visit the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, meet with our leadership, hear our people’s stories and formulate your opinions on the basis of experience of all sides of the conflict, not just one side.

The people of Palestine endure daily suffering under Israel’s occupation, colonization, humiliation and the tragic loss of innocent loved ones.

Israel’s latest military assaults on Gaza have cost the lives of nearly 2,000 Palestinians. Over 1,400 of the dead over 70% were civilians, including more than 460 children and more than 240 women. 10,000 people were injured. These numbers clearly indicate that Israel’s military aggression was indiscriminate and disproportionate. In other words, Israel committed war crimes.

The dead and injured are not just unfortunate by-products of Israel’s military aggression. They were ordinary people trying to live their lives just like the people of New York. The difference is that the Palestinian people living in occupied Gaza like the people of all the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, are denied basic freedoms by Israel’s illegal colonization of land that is internationally recognized including by successive US Administrations as Palestinian. Israel cuts people off from their land with an illegal Wall. It enforces segregation on buses and prevents Palestinians from driving on Israeli-only roads. It detains Palestinians illegally, including children. And Israel has, for eight years, maintained a chokehold over Gaza, controlling it by air, land and sea. It controls Gaza’s water supply and even controls food allowed to Palestinians living in Gaza by calorie. Due to the blockade 43% of Palestinians living in Gaza are unemployed, 57% are food insecure and 80% are dependent on food aid. What would you do if 80% of New Yorkers were on the brink of starvation at the hands of an occupying Power?

All these practices are illegal. Most are a serious breach of international law, including international human rights and humanitarian law. Obligations under international humanitarian law are absolute, not relative. Israel’s behavior undermines and erodes the very foundation of the rules we should all live by, including the Geneva Conventions. It constitutes a systematic persecution of an entire population.

  1. Palestine gives the prime example of just how meaningless “international law” is. Especially in America which doesn’t even recognize the international crimes court.
