Interesting! I have recently been reading about Sikhism (and other aspects of Indian history and culture) in preparation for a two week trip to southern India in January. That Sikhs have been assaulted as terrorist “towelheads” is a sad testament to FOX inflamed American jingoism and ignorance. Thanks, Lou!
Hopefully most people around the world don’t view all Americans as the narrow minded and right winged fools who run and anchor Fox news.
Fair and balanced my arse.
I’ve known several Sikh people from a local family run grocery store and they are the sweetest and most charitable people I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing.

Awesome; nicely explained. This is definitely much needed information on the fundamentals of the Sikh religion, and for those individuals or people from different walks of life, who misunderstand the Sikhs. The Sikhs are peace-loving, generous and a god-fearing community. Dapinder Ahluwalia

Excellent work!! As Americans, we need to make sincere efforts to reach out to all our neighbors, regardless of origin and background. The Sikh way of life – all children of One Creator, respect and love for all mankind – fits naturally into the fabric and principles of equality envisioned by the founding fathers. It’s high time that all Americans recognize the “Mistaken Identity” crisis that the Sikhs have been facing for over 10 years. Turbans in America are worn by Sikhs from Northern India and no one else. Sikhs are still targets of hate crimes today. Here’s an event from last week:

[…] After attending a Sikh film festival in New York in 2011, I stopped by the cubicle of a fellow programmer at Columbia University who wore a turban. As most educated Americans understand, this is an important element of their religion. The uneducated ones mistake them for Osama bin-Laden and his fanatical supporters who also wore turbans, with the most deeply uneducated resorting to violent attacks on a gentle and decent people. I interviewed Harpreet Wahan Singh not long after I made his acquaintance, thus becoming more knowledgeable about Sikh beliefs and the problems they are facing in a period of deepening xenophobia following 9/11.
