  1. Wow. Just Wow. I’m at work and only listened to the first five or so minutes but that Shostakovich was breathtaking and that’s a somewhat difficult piece to get right. If I hadn’t known that was a youth orchestra I would never have guessed. Writing as one who, decades ago, played tuba in a youth orch. I know only too well how we often lacked the poise and intonation that generally takes a few more years study. But these guys…that was as good as a Haitink recording I have.

  2. They are amazing, aren’t they? The SBYO performed under Dudamel at the BBC Proms, 2007 and blew the audiences away. Here’s Bernstein’s Mambo:

  3. I downloaded a CD of them playing Latin American ballet music, including Villa-Lobos.

  4. OH YES that’s what I’m talking about. That’s what I’m talking about. That’s what I’m talking about. I wonder what it would be like to teach in a country where you weren’t having to fight tooth and nail to have the opportunity for young urban scholars to find the classics in themselves, and wed them to other world forms. Machito must be smiling in whatever hoodoo heaven he looks out from now.
